News  Date: 07 July 2006

The police in the Mopani area have arrested a 44-year-old man in connection with the death of a 36-year-old woman. The incident that led to his arrest took place at Madonsi Village near Malamulele on Saturday evening at about 18:45.

Capt Maano Sadike, spokesperson for the police in the area, said that the deceased and the suspect had a love affair. According to the police statement, the deceased went to the suspect’s home on the day of the incident. He was relaxing outside the house when she arrived. The statement indicates that an argument ensued between the two soon afterwards. The core of the argument was that the deceased was accusing the suspect of failure to pay her jewellery account.

The suspect insisted that he had no money and that it would be difficult for him to settle the account. The argument grew with time and the man allegedly decided to leave the woman outside and went inside the house. It is stated in the police report that the woman followed him into the house and continued with the argument. The situation took an ugly turn when the woman allegedly produced a firearm. It changed into a wrestling match between the two, as the man tried to grab the weapon from the woman.

The police statement further indicates that the suspect allegedly pulled the trigger and a bullet hit the woman in the head. The suspect was arrested on Tuesday morning and he was still to appear in court at the time of going to press.
