Local author nominated for esteemed awards

 

A local author, Mushayathoni Nwovhe, is one of the three nominees for this year’s Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Award.

The finalists in the competition are: Lufuno A Si Tserere by Mushayathoni Nwovhe; Mina Ngiyadideka”by Albert Sipho Ntombela; and Obab Abangebaba by Bukelani Mmelly Shangase.

Nwovhe said that she was delighted to be nominated for this esteemed award for the first time. “This is just priceless,” she said.

Nwovhe was born and raised in Makonde village. She is the author of a motivational book entitled Dream Beyond The Slumber and an anthology entitled The Calendars Time.

The first-place winner will receive R6 000, while R4 000 goes to the second-placed nominee and R2 000 is awarded for third place. The winner will be announced at a private launch at the Sol Plaatje University in Kimberley on 26 September 2018.

The award is named after political and social activist Solomon Tshekisho Plaatje (1876–1932), and aims to reveal ‘the political and social attitudes of our time’ and reflect ‘the complex, nuanced and uncomfortable truths of life in South Africa’.

Mbulaheni Ridovhona

The 22-year-old Mbulaheni (Gary) Ridovhona has been passionate about journalism to the extent that he would buy himself a copy of weekly Univen students' newsletter, Our Voice. After reading, he would write stories about his rural village, Mamvuka, and submit them to the very newsletter for publication. His deep-rooted love for words and writing saw him register for a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies at the University of Venda, and joined the Limpopo Mirror team in February 2016 as a journalism intern.
