News  Date: 27 April 2007

A 28-year-old South African man was brutally stabbed to death with a knife by some unknown suspects before they robbed him of R50 at Dumba Village near Beitbridge town in Zimbabwe.

Police spokesman for Matabeleland South Province Insp Trust Ndlovu said the incident occurred on Sunday at around 22:00. "The victim was with his cousin and they were coming from drinking beer at a nearby homestead, when they were eventually confronted by three unknown suspects, wielding knives and knobkerries. One of the suspects then grabbed the victim by the collar, while others searched his pockets before robbing him of R50," he said.

They then stabbed him several times all over his body, using a knife, and he died on the spot. Ndlovu said the victim´s cousin managed to escape and the suspects tried to chase after him, but he managed to outpace them.

The cousin then went to a nearby police station where he reported the matter to the police. No arrests have been made so far and police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects. "As police we have since started investigating and we have intensified the hunt for the suspects. We are also appealing to community members to assist us with information which might lead to the arrest of the suspects," said the police spokesman.

Ndlovu could not release the name of the deceased, saying they were yet to inform his next of kin in Thohoyandou. The victim was reportedly on a weekend visit to Zimbabwe.
