Black Leopards advanced to the last 16 of the continental Confederation of African Football (CAF) Cup, when they beat Warri Wolves of Nigeria 2-0 at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday.
The 2-0 victory and a 1-3 defeat at the Warri Township Stadium in Nigeria a fortnight ago, computes to a 3-3 agregate score, but due to the "away goals" rule, Black Leopards progressed to the next stage of the competition. Leopards' hero was the Zimbabwean striker, Kingston Nkatha. He scored a brace, one goal in each half.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) congratulated Black Leopards on their achievement. “I would, on behalf of SAFA, like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Black Leopards. They continue to carry the South African flag high and I would like to wish them all the best in the next round of the competition,” said SAFA president Mr Kirsten Nematandani.
According to Nematandani thanked club chairman David Thidiela for a job well done. "SAFA will continue to give the club all the support during their campaign on the continent,” he added.
This is Leopards’ first opportunity in CAF’s second tier of the continent’s club competition. They now join the seven other qualifiers and eight CAF Champions League second-round losers for the intermediate round of the competition.
According to a spokesperson for SAFA, despite fighting relegation at home, Leopards’ performance in the African club competition has been a fairytale. They beat Zimbabwe’s Motor Action 3-1 in the first round and accounted for DRCongo’s St Eloi Lupopo in the second round 6-4 on aggregate.
