Teams gear up for Nedbank Cup KO

The 2020 edition of the Nedbank Cup KO competition was officially launched during a ceremony at the Nedbank offices in Johannesburg last Thursday evening.

As usual, all PSL teams, eight from the GladAfrica Championship Division and another eight from the amateur level will take part in this year’s competition.

The draw for the Round-32 stage was conducted during the ceremony. Although the opening matches will be played in three weeks’ time, a number of fixtures are the talk of the town. The match between Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits will be a final before the actual final. Orlando Pirates will enjoy the home-ground advantage.

The Pretoria derby between Mamelodi Sundowns and SuperSport United is expected to attract a huge number of spectators. Either Baroka FC or Polokwane City will not take part in the Round-16 stage of the competition. They drew each other in the last-32 stage.

Black Leopards will have nobody else to blame if they fail to proceed to the last-16 stage. They were matched with the amateur side, North West University. The fact that Lidoda Duvha will be the hosts is reason enough for the Thohoyandou side to believe that the match will be a mere formality.

When asked to comment about the draw, the coach of Black Leopards, Mr Kevin Johnson, said his focus was on the league matches they would play before the Nedbank fixture. He stressed the fact that they concentrated on one match at a time.

The other Round-32 Nedbank fixtures are: Zizwe United vs Happy Wanderers, Stellenbosch FC vs Maritzburg United, Amavarara FC vs Super Eagles, Vaal University of Technology vs Lamontville Golden Arrows, Chippa United vs TS Galaxy, Bloemfontein Celtic vs Amazulu FC, Mbombela United vs Cape Town City, Kaizer Chiefs vs Royal Eagles, Highlands Park vs Uthongathi FC, Passion FC vs Real Kings, Ajax Cape Town vs TS Sporting and Jomo Cosmos vs Hungry Lions FC.
