Sekhukhune United suffers their first loss

Sekhukhune United are still battling to come to terms with the result of their GladAfrica Championship League match against Steenberg United, which was played at the Ida’s Valley Stadium outside Cape Town last Saturday. They lost 0-1 to end their unbeaten record of four matches.

Sekhukhune United dropped a step down on the log standings, following the defeat. They are now lying in the second position after leading the pack for three weeks. Richards Bay FC are now shining on top of the log with 32 points, one ahead of Sekhukhune United and Real Kings. Richards Bay and Real Kings had played one match fewer than Sekhukhune United.

When asked to comment after the team’s defeat against Steenberg United, the club’s assistant communications and marketing manager, Ms Thina “Chitagong” Ramantswana, said that they were not too concerned about the fact that they had given away vital league points.

She said that losing a match after four successive victories was not a train smash. She again stated that, after procuring the GladAfrica Championship League franchise from Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila FC early this season, as a club they set a target of three years for themselves to be in the DStv Premiership.

She went on to say that everyone in the club was impressed with the team’s performance so far. According to her, should the team manage to partake in the promotional playoffs at the end of the current season, that would be a bonus. “With 11 matches to play before the end of the season, anything is still possible,” she said.

Sekhukhune’s next fixture will be against Cape Town All Stars at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane next Saturday, 3 April. The fight for survival is between two teams, Ajax Cape Town, and the rookies, Bizana Pondo Chiefs. Chiefs are languishing at the bottom of the log with 14 points, one behind the Cape Town side.
