After releasing four successful albums between 1999 and 2010, well-known local reggae legend Humbulani “Jump The Gun” Muthude is back in the studio, finalizing his fifth album.
Commonly known as Jahman Chiganja by his fans, Muthude is a teacher in agricultural science at Ranndogwana High.
Since he started teaching 26 years ago, he has received coutless awards from the Department of Education for producing a 100% pass rate in the Grade 12 final examinations. He also teaches English and Arts and Culture.
Last Saturday, Jahman Chiganja became an instant hero when he was requested to be a guest presenter for the Univen FM reggae music programme.
“The calls from the listeners were overwhelming. I am grateful to the management of Univen FM for inviting me to present the programme. It was quite a great honour for me and I enjoyed sitting behind the microphone, while hitting the listeners with their favourite music.”
Growing up in the rural village of Mushiru taught Jahman Chiganja to love his tradition and culture. “My late father, Munzhongo, used to be a respected malende dancer, and as an eight-year-old boy, I followed him wherever he went to perform. That is where my love for music developed.”
He said his recording career was not as easy as his fans might think. “Because I was unknown to studio owners then, I was turned away several times when I tried to record my songs. My breakthrough came in 1999 when I recorded my debut album, Acres of Ganja. It was well received by music lovers and that encouraged me to work hard. I then recorded my second album, Respect Jah in 2000. The third album, titled Rock of Stability, was recorded in 2003. Ganja Seed was released in 2010 and people are still enjoying it.”
He said all his albums received massive airplay at local community radio stations and on SABC Phalaphala FM. He says on his due-to-be-released album: “My next 10-track album, titled Ganja Feeling, will be released in September. It carries tracks like Hallelujah, Hu vhusa nnyi, Jah is our Creator, and Kha ri farelane, to name just a few. Everything has been finalized and it is just a matter of time before it is released.” His message to the youth who want to follow a music career is that education is the only foundation for a successful future.
“If one gets education, he has something to lean on if the music career is shaking.”
