The saying “Like father like son” has proved to be a reality to a rural young man, who is making a name in the world of sculpture and jewellery.
Japhter Luvhimbi (32) of Muledane recently made a sculpture of Hector Peterson, who was killed during the Soweto Uprising on June 16, 1976. “I started making figures in 2001. I was taught by my father, and that took my art to another level as a business. I have participated in several exhibitions and competitions and I won the third place in the Vhembe District Young Business of the year Competition in 2011 tourism category,” said Luvhimbi.
Luvhimbi said some of his art works are bought by Wits University Art Gallery, Madi a thavha art museum and some were already sold to tourists from the Netherlands, United States and France.
“Some of my jewellery was used for the soapie Muvhango’s actresses. Now, I am running an art company, Luvhimbi Fine Arts and Craft, where we exhibit wooden jewellery such as earrings, necklaces and bracelets, and unique wooden shoe heels,” Luvhimbi added.
Luvhimbi presented the sculpture of Hector Peterson to Univen students during the recent Africa Day celebrations.
