The 22-year break that musician Alpheus Mukhese (56), or Target Fire as he is also known, has had since his early years in the music industry, is finally over.

Mukhese of Mangondi has made a major come back with the release of his latest album, Lufuno. He uses his own name on the new album, which contains a mix of various music genres, and it is expected to appeal to all music lovers.

Mukhese, a teacher and ordained pastor, shot to prominence in the disco music arena in 1991 with the release of his hit album Vha Khou Lila, which achieved platinum status at the time. In 1994 he released the album Zwitshele, and that was also his final album, until his latest offering.

Mukhese, who had the privilege of backing Percy Sledge in his show in Thohoyandou in 1983, said good things followed those who waited. He added that his music had mellowed like “old wine” and people could see now what he was still capable of doing. “I have been in this industry for a long time and my profession as a teacher took much of my time. After I added another career as a pastor, it was difficult to complete my album, due to a lack of time. Transition also takes time; to me it was a transition from disco to a cool type of music that I have come up with. I changed many session musicians until I found the sound that I had always wanted. I am happy with the product; it is worth listening to,” he said.

He further indicated that pressure from his hordes of fans became unbearable. “They know that I am talented. Wherever I went, people would ask when a new album was coming out and I had to succumb to the pressure, but the pressure was worth it. All the tracks on the album have a message. I am a pastor, as you know, and all I teach is righteousness. I hope the message will help many to deal with their challenges,” he said.

Tracks that stand out are the title track, Lufuno, Ndi Ya Murenda and Tshisima. The album will soon be available at all record stores. People having problems in getting his music can phone him on 079 759 5259.
