The words Grace and Mercy form the title of Joyce Makgauta-Marwala's album, which was released recently. She says that she called her project Grace and Mercy because grace and mercy are the only weapons that have assisted her to achieve peace of mind in life.

The tracks on the album include Ndzi wa wena, N'wana wakwe, Worship medley, Lord I want you, and Nguvu ya yesu.

“I composed most of my songs, because I wanted the album to also talk to my heart,” she says. “I sing contemporary and traditional gospel. This is my comfort zone and I am able to release my talent and show off what I am called to do in this genre without any struggle.”

She points out that Lebo Sekgobela has been her role model in the music industry. “She is an anointed singer and really understands her calling as a singer. She is not a perfomer, but a worshipper.”

She has worked with her husband, Shardy Theledi Marwala, on her project. Marwala acted as music director and also played the piano. “We also worked with our friends,” they add.

The album was recorded at Mamphogoro Studio at Makwarela in Thohoyandou. Joyce intends to market her album to reach all corners of South Africa. “I won't be doing my second album anytime soon,” she says. “But I am planning to record a DVD.”

She received an Ingoma Award as best backing vocalist in 2015. She is proud of her parents, Mrs Monica and Mr Elias Shirinda, who helped shape her character. “They have always supported me on my journey in music and I am grateful to still have both parents alive,” she says.

Joyce is a social worker. “I enjoy music as much as I do my work of a social worker,” she says.
