Redboy Mchangana is Satma nominee

Sydney Chauke, popularly known as Redboy Mchangana, has been nominated in the Best Xitsonga Album category of the South African Traditional Music Awards (Satma) 2017. He hails from Phaphazela Village, Malamulele.

His 13-song album, Blesser, is enjoying huge airplay at the local radio stations. In the category, he is pitted against Team Nyenya (Yeso Va Rivaleli album) and Sir Jambatani (Milorho album). Blesser is his eighth album.

The theme for this year's awards is “Celebrating Legends,” whereby the pioneers of traditional music will be acknowledged and celebrated for preserving and exhibiting indigenous music of South Africa.

Chauke said that he was excited about being nominated. "I feel very honoured and humbled to be recognized for my music. It is priceless," he added. "To all my fans, this nomination belongs to you. Your support put me where I am today and victory is entirely dependent on you. You have done so marvellous in supporting my music since day one."

He said that he started singing hip hop music in 2004, and in 2005, he changed to Xitsonga music. He also said that Parson "Mapayitele" Chauke taught him how to play most musical instruments.

The awards will be hosted in North West Province at the Mmabatho Convention Centre on 29 and 30 September.

Mbulaheni Ridovhona

The 22-year-old Mbulaheni (Gary) Ridovhona has been passionate about journalism to the extent that he would buy himself a copy of weekly Univen students' newsletter, Our Voice. After reading, he would write stories about his rural village, Mamvuka, and submit them to the very newsletter for publication. His deep-rooted love for words and writing saw him register for a Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies at the University of Venda, and joined the Limpopo Mirror team in February 2016 as a journalism intern.
