Royal heritage festival

Many residents of Limpopo and its outskirts are gearing up for the annual Phalaphala FM Royal Gospel and Heritage Festival today and tomorrow (Friday and Saturday).

It is the fifth year that the festival is taking place and it is one of the premier culture, music and lifestyle events in the province. The festival will host some of the biggest names in the South African talent pool, including some of the best artists that Limpopo has to offer.

Known as the prime place to be, and with an attraction of over 20 000 spectators, it has become part of life in Thohoyandou as it gives the audience a chance to get down and experience some of their favourite musicians and celebrities. This year, the annual festival will be pulling out all the stops with two days of non-stop music and an all-star line-up.

According to one of the organisers, Shandu Nesengani, the purpose of the heritage festival is to showcase the cultural diversity of Vhembe and Limpopo. “The festival provides the province with an opportunity to unify its citizens and the neighbouring countries to celebrate the rich cultural heritage and promote tourism in the province,” he added.

The event will start with a fun walk at 07:00. A healthy body harbours a healthy mind and this will be illustrated during the King Toni Mphephu Ramabulana Fun Walk and musangwe, which will take place today.

The 10-km walk aims to offer the community around the Vhembe district Thohoyandou an event that encourages a healthy lifestyle and social cohesion. It will then be followed by musangwe (traditional boxing), which is a Venda tradition of bare-knuckle fistfighting.

The first ever Royal Gospel Festival edition will set the tone today (Friday).  Multi-award-winning international gospel powerhouse MTN Joyous Celebration will be the crowd pullers. Joining them on stage will be award-winning gospel sensations Lebo Sekgobela, Winnie Mashaba, Worship House, Sipho Makhabane, Rofhiwa Manyanga, Lebo Elle Tisane, Naphy M, Rudolf Mabasa, Lufuno Buda, Bishop Roxley Masevhe, Secret of Worship, Ndivhuwo Matuba, Mercy Masakona, Lufuno Dagada, and Lwei plus a surprise act.

The Royal Heritage Festival will take place on Saturday. Setting the stage alight will be Cassper Nyovest, Sipho Hotstix Mabuse, Lira, Alick Macheso, Amanda Black, Thomas Chauke, Lira, Sjava, Sands, Ok MalumKoolKat, Dr Malinga, Colbert Mukwevho, Phuzekhemisi, Benny Mayengani, Lady Zamar, DJs Fresh, Lerato Kganyago, Distruction Boyz, Maphorisa, Malwela, Miss Pru, Mobi Dixon, Thuli P, Mazwale, Makhadzi and many more.

Tickets are now available from Computicket. The prices are R190 for general access, R1000 for VIP and R250 at the gate.

Kaizer Nengovhela

Kaizer Nengovhela started writing stories for Limpopo Mirror in 2000. Prior to that he had a five year stint at Phala-Phala FM as sports presenter. In 2005 Kaizer received an award from the province's premier as Best Sports Presenter. The same year he was also nominated as Best Sports Reporter by the Makhado Municipality.
