Thohoyandou God is Love is 25 years old

Music groups come and go, but one choral group in Limpopo has stood the test of time.

Formed 25 years ago and with five popular albums and DVDs to their name, the Thohoyandou God is love Choir reflected on those years and celebrated their successes and achievements during an event held at the Nazarene Hall in Thohoyandou two weeks ago.

To add spice to the celebrations, the group also launched its new fifth album, Mbilu Yanga.

The group was formed by three friends, Doctor Love Khorommbi, Edward Shandukani and Colbert Tshililo, at Mphego village outside Thohoyandou in 1993.

Among the guests were councillors, traditional leaders, Headman Patrick Azwihangwisi Nedambale and many members of the community. Supporting choirs also performed during the function.

Headman Nedambale said he had been following the group for years and that he felt honoured to have been part of the celebrations.

Khorommbi, a founding member of the group, said they felt they should reflect on the long journey they had travelled and celebrate their achievements in style. "We have won so many awards, appeared on TV and our songs are always flighted on radio. We have performed at esteemed events like the Mapungubwe Arts Festival three times and, on top of that, we have a new album out. This really calls for celebration," he said.

He further indicated they will soon embark on a national tour to promote their new album and thanked those who had supported them since the choir's inception.
