Even while she is bustling to get everything ready for the grand opening, hotel manager Rae McMurtrie finds time for a cup of coffee and a tour of the Soutpansberg’s "Grand Old Lady."
Many residents and guests might know the “lady” better as the old Punch Bowl Hotel. After 18 months of non-stop work and toil, the old dame is finally ready to show off her new feathers.
Prior to being the Punch Bowl, the hotel was known as the New Gate Guest Farm. In 2001/2, the hotel was sold and became known as the Inn on Louis Trichardt. In recent years, the hotel faded away when it was sold again.
However, thanks to new ownership and management, this landmark hotel has been restored to her former glory.
With new beginnings also comes change, with the hotel being renamed to Avoca Vale, the name drawing its inspiration from the new owner’s Irish roots. Avoca Vale is an idyllic spot in Ireland – and what can be more tranquil than a charming hotel overlooking the majestic Soutpansberg, with a large garden laced with colourful roses, lilies and clivias and a serene pool?
The building that houses the reception area, lounges and dining room used to be a farmhouse that dates back many decades. Avoca Vale now has six garden-wing suites, 12 suites with family rooms included, a dining room, two lounges and a conference room. The existing tea garden has been closed and will be incorporated with the hotel as a second conference venue.
The hotel and grounds with its colonial atmosphere of yesteryear has attractive and private accommodation catering to a variety of guests. The interior of the hotel, which was bought from the old Carlton Hotel, has an old-world English charm and with fires burning, sherry in hand – life could not be better!
All the rooms, including the original rondavel rooms of the guest farm, have been refurbished. The hotel now also boasts a cosy ladies bar, the Strawbury Duck.
For Rae and her family, who are no strangers to the hotel industry, it felt like coming home.
“I managed the tea garden from 2003 until 2006,”said Rae.
Bookings are already open for their Christmas served lunch and a quick glance over the menu confirms Rae’s promise that no one will leave with an empty stomach.
