Giyani Adult Choir the best in the region

GIYANI - Several choirs competed in the regional championships of the Old Mutual/Telkom National Choir Festival, which was held at the Giyani Community Hall on Sunday.

In the large choir category, the Giyani Adult Choir took the first position in the African rendition. They were followed by the Polokwane Choral Society and the Virtuoso Singers respectively. Giyani Adult Choir obtained the first position in the Western song of the same category. Polokwane Choral Society came second with Virtuoso Singers in the third place.

In the Standard Choir category, Voices of the North Choir took position one in the African rendition. Malamulele EPC finished second and the choir from Zimbabwe, Chitungwiza Harmony Singers, obtained the third position. Voices of the North choir took the first position in the Western rendition of the standard choir category.

Jubilante Choral Society and Malamulele EPC obtained the next two positions respectively. In the overall results, Voices of the North finished first in the standard choir category. Malamulele EPC and Jubilante Choral Society followed in the next two positions.

Voices of the North, Malamulele EPC and Jubilante Choral Society received cash prizes ranging from R5 000 down to R3 000 and trophies. The overall winner in the large choir category was Giyani Adult Choir. Polokwane Choral Society and the Virtuoso Singers finished second and third respectively.

Unlike in the Standard choir category, the winning choirs in the large category were given R6 000, R5 000 and R4 000 respectively. The cash prizes were accompanied by trophies. The overall winners in each category will compete in the national competitions that will be staged at the Dome Hall in Northgate, Johannesburg, on December 6 and 7. Giyani Adult Choir was the winner in last year's regional competition.
