People who might have fallen victim to fraudulent life insurance policies are urged to notify the police. This warning from the Louis Trichardt Magistrate’s Court follows the conviction of two women who had forged life policies.
Azwindini Muluadzi (37) and Tshifhiwa Mathomu (30) were sentenced to six months' direct imprisonment. Both appeared in the Louis Trichardt District Court last Thursday (16/02) on single counts of fraud.
The pair, who were working at Liberty Life, admitted to forging the signatures of clients and pocketing the commission. Unsuspecting clients only realised something was wrong when instalments for the policy were deducted from their salaries.
Closer investigation revealed that Muluadzi and Mathomu had pocketed the commission on the policies that they had “sold.” Both were arrested a fortnight ago.
During Thursday’s appearance, they pleaded guilty to the charges. Muluadzi admitted in her statement that she had written a life cover policy for Mushasha Maserame in her absence and received R851.69 in commission.
Mathomu also admitted that she had done the same with a client, David Sigebe, for which she received R3 778.21 commission.
It is suspected that there might be many more people who have fallen prey to the scam. People who suspect that they might have been scammed are urged to go to their nearest police station and lay criminal charges.
