MAKHADO (LOUIS TRICHARDT) – The Makhado Municipality's Director of Community Services, Mr Mavhungu Musitha, called on all residents to respect and protect community property.

Mr Musitha also called on members of the community who have information about the recent vandalising of traffic signs in Extension 2 (Sonop) to come forward and contact the municipality.

On May 20, residents discovered extensive damage to road signs in this residential area. Stop signs and street names had been wilfully smashed down – apparently with a vehicle with a bull bar.

Signs were vandalised and removed from the corners of Leeu and Malva, Tshirululuni and Rietbok, Rietbok and Bauhinia, Bauhinia and Buffel, Eland and Bauhinia and Koraalboom Streets. The damage is estimated at just under R2 000.

In a media release, residents are reminded that these signs are part of the community property, which belongs to all taxpayers. The municipality will replace all the signs, but at the taxpayers' expense. "We therefore urge people to refrain from such actions and to rather spend energy on worthwhile matters, like celebrating the 10 years of democracy and the winning of the World Soccer Cup bid."

Anyone with information about those responsible for the massive vandalism in Sonop is requested to phone the municipality at Tel (015) 519 3000
