Concern over way records are kept

Concern has been expressed in the Limpopo Legislature that proper records for foreign aid to the provincial Health Department are not kept, while control over stock-taking and the documentation of payments are also unsatisfactory.

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) has pointed out that, according to a report by the provincial Standing Committee on Public Accounts, the Health Department has been unable to supply the Auditor-General with details of the foreign aid. Unless such funding is properly accounted for, it could dry up, ACDP leader Neels Roelofse contends.

He also believes that the absence of regular welfare stocktaking in certain regions could lead to theft and pilfering.

Roelofse has also raised concern about the handling of the vehicle fleet of the Department of Education. He is worried about the fact that two vehicles from the central region were apparently stolen, according to a report from the Auditor-general. In this regard, no police report could be produced to prove that the theft was reported.

"The Standing Committee's recommendation that a follow-up be made during the next audit is absurd. Why is there no request to the MEC to look into the matter?" Roelofse contends.
