Disco star fear for his life after speaking out on corruption

News  Date: 30 April 2012

Flamboyant disco star Eric “Penny -Penny” Ngovani says his life is a nightmare as he is receiving threatening calls to kill him from his comrades.

Nkovani, who is now a councillor of the July Mawere ward in the Greater Giyani Municipality, said the threats came after he sent an SMS to the Mopani District Municipality's executive  mayor, Joshua Matlou,  pleading with him to stop contractors who were supposed to build toilets in his ward at Mapuve village

He said that stopping them was part of the ward resolution that all people registered as businesspeople in the district must benefit from the district project. “Later we discovered that all the people who were given contracts are close friends of politicians or even politician themselves. How can we say that we are representing people if we agree to such mismanagement?" he asked.

He said he spoke to the executive mayor and even to Premier Cassel Mathale about the matter. “I saw many councillors around the country whose homes are being burned down because of poor service delivery and corruption. When people revolt,  they don't go the President or premier. They come to us directly and burn our houses. This is the reason why I hate corruption,” said Nkovani

He said after he had raised the issue, he created lots of enemies around him. Nkovani also said he had already changed his cell phone number because he does not sleep during the night as a result of death treats.

When approached for comment, Matlou strongly denied the allegations, saying that the municipality was very strictly about the awarding of tenders.
