NZHELELE - A well-known local artist, Ratshilumela Samson Mudzunga (64) of Dopeni, Shanzha in Nzhelele is a happy man after the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court acquitted him of arson.

Mudzunga, a well-known sculpture acclaimed nationally and internationally for his work, was arrested in 1997 by the police at Siloam, on a charge of arson. At that time, Mudzunga, who had some differences with his uncle, Ntsandeni Samuel Netshiavha, a traditional leader of Tshiavha Village, was accused of setting alight the house of Netshiavha.

Shortly before the alleged arson attack, Mudzunga and Netshiavha had a serious misunderstanding, after Mudzunga staged some traditional dances near the Great Lake Dzivhafundudzi, against the wish of Netshiavha, who claim ownership of the Lake.

Local, national and international media covered the story of Mudzunga's arrest. Besides the exposure he received from his unique art, Mudzunga also made headlines when he staged his own burial, where he was buried alive in a coffin he carved on his own.

This mock funeral also attracted lots of criticism from some of the community members and the police.

Mudzunga's arson case, which was once suspended last June, finally came to an end in October this year, when Magistrate Mantsha acquitted Mudzunga of arson charges.

Mudzunga, who was represented by Mr TN Ramashia, said he is happy that he is acquitted, and that he is considering taking legal steps against Netshiavha.

Netshiavha was not available for comment at the time of going to press.
