SA tourist killed in crash in Zimbabwe

News  Date: 18 May 2012

A South African tourist on visit in Zimbabwe was killed, while another was seriously injured when the motorcycles they were riding hit an ox at the 22km peg along the Masvingo-Great Zimbabwe Road.

The local police spokesperson, Insp Tinaye Matake, said the accident happened last Friday at around 04:47 near the Great Zimbabwe Hotel. The injured man was taken to Masvingo General Hospital, while the deceased’s body was taken to the mortuary for a post mortem.

Matake said the name of the deceased is still being withheld until his next of kin have been notified. He added that the deceased was travelling with a colleague, Mr David Crain (62), on motorbikes from Harare back to South Africa. “When they reached the 22km peg along the Masvingo-Great Zimbabwe road, an ox suddenly appeared on the road. The deceased swerved to avoid the animal, but he hit it on its shoulder and he sustained serious injuries, leading to his death.“ His friend, who was also riding on his own motorbike and was behind, crashed into him and sustained some injuries.

In an interview at the scene of the accident, the dead man’s friend said they were a group of six South Africans travelling from Harare.
