Still no outcome in magistrate´s corruption trail

News  Date: 28 May 2012

The final score in the trial of senior regional magistrate Ronnie Rambau, accused of accepting a bribe to influence the outcome of a court case, remains to be settled.

The corruption trial against Rambau and his co-accused, attorney T E Lubisi and state prosecutor Estene Willemse, continued in Musina this week. All three appeared in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

They were arrested during a police trap and stand accused of influencing the outcome of certain court cases. The main charges brought against them include corruption and conspiracy to commit corruption.

The men’s defence team asked for a postponement in the case last year, following the court’s rejection of their application to have the case withdrawn. They claimed, among other things, that the police had not adhered to surveillance law and had gone “beyond the mere creating of an opportunity” and “obtained information in an unlawful and intentional” way.

During Monday’s court proceedings, Lubisi asked for another postponement to afford him the opportunity to lodge an application for a Legal Aid Board attorney.

The case was postponed to 27 August, this year, when Rambau is expected to enter the defence box and start testifying.
