Phungo All Stars were too good for Rospa United in their Vodacom League match, when they beat them 2-1 at the Eltivillas grounds on Saturday.
There was a spirit of commitment from both sides throughout the game. Rospa were intimidated by the yellow card that was flashed to their defender, Shonisani Leaka, in the 14th minute. Ivan Mahangwahaya of Stars scored after a scramble within the box in the 20th minute. The score was 1-0 when the referee, Dion Mpumba, blew the half-time whistle.
The second half started at a snail's pace, with both teams struggling to penetrate each other’s defence. Rospa pressed hard in their search for goals. Stars gained momentum as the game progressed. It was in the 49th minute when their lethal striker, Lutendo Mulaudzi, missed a fortune. He shot wide with the keeper, Mxolisi Ncube, well beaten.
Rospa did not lose their fighting spirit although one of their key players, Meshack Maphangule, was red-carded.
Stars introduced the speedy Justice Rasebotse for Charles Melenyane. The introduction of Justice was a clever move; he was everywhere, distributing dangerous passes.
The home team would have had only themselves to blame had they lost the match. They abused countless scoring opportunities in the second half. Dion Phiri unleashed prematurely instead of moving a few steps towards the keeper.
Justice Rasebotse scored his team’s second goal when he sent a rocket into the roof of the net. Rospa did not press the panic button, despite the fact that their fans were becoming impatient. Their only goal of came in the 85th minute. Happy Mahuntshi scored after a scramble in the box.
Kaizer Nengovhela started writing stories for Limpopo Mirror in 2000. Prior to that he had a five year stint at Phala-Phala FM as sports presenter.
