Family puzzled by burning taxi

News  Date: 25 October 2002

GONDENI - The mysterious burning down of a taxi has left a family puzzled, as they do not know the motive behind it.

Isaac Tshivhase of Gondeni La-Ha-Mabilu said they were shocked to find that his elder brother, Christopher Nefale's taxi was burning last week Thursday night. "My father, Johannes Nefale was asleep in my brother's house when he heard an explosion, which came from my brother's E20. By that time, the car was already burnt down."

Although police were called on the same night, Tshivhase said they could not do anything as the taxi had already been completely damaged. A case of arson was opened at Phiphidi Satellite Police Station. No one has been arrested so far.

Tshivhase said they suspect that the taxi might be burnt by the youth who break into cars and steal radios and other parts in the area. "Last month, unknown people broke into the garage and stole a carburettor of another taxi.

"These youth once tried to steal a gear box last month, after they stole the carburettor. We believe they burnt the taxi to provoke us," said Tshivhase.

Tshivhase said his brother, who is running another taxi business in Johannesburg has offered R2 000 to anyone who can help with information that can lead to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.

Tshivhase also assured the public that any person who will provide information would be protected. For information that can help, phone 082 785 0357.
