SIBASA – Pupils from Mbilwi High School performed remarkably well in the annual African Languages Olympiad competition. Fifteen of the top 25 pupils were from the school.

The examination was written in August and the results were released two weeks ago. The prize giving ceremony was held in Pretoria last Friday.

According to the Tshivenda teacher at the school, Mrs Mavis Tshikovhele 180 pupils from her school entered the competition.

A pupil from Thengwe High School, Gumani Takalani, obtained the first position in the competition. She managed to score 84% in the competition. Thabo Kgopana from a Gauteng based school, Kusasalethu High School was the runner up.

The third place went to Portia Munyangane from Mbilwi. The best pupil in the competition, Gumani Takalani received a cash prize amounting to R3 000, a certificate, a gold medal and a folding bag during the prize giving ceremony.

The second placed pupil went home with a cheque to the value of R2500, a certificate and a silver medal while Munyangane received a cash prize of R2 000, a certificate and a bronze medal. The other top 25 pupils were each given a certificate and a cash prize of R45.

All participating schools were each given a trophy while the top three schools Mbilwi, Thengwe and Kusasalethu were also awarded cash incentives. The competition was sponsored by the Foundation for Education, Science and Technology.
