Parliament to convene in Limpopo?

News  Date: 18 October 2002

LEBOWAKGOMO - The New National Party has proposed that one of the three former homeland government complexes in Limpopo Province be made available to accommodate the parliament of the newly formed African Union.

NNP provincial leader, Schalk van Schalkwyk, submitted the motion during the last sitting of the province's legislature at Lebowakgomo this week.

He pointed out that facilities at Lebowakgomo, currently used by the provincial legislature, are situated near an international airport. The infrastructure of the complex, including its large number of offices, makes it the ideal venue for the African Union to utilise, he explained.

Van Schalkwyk suggested that the Limpopo Provincial Legislature could move to one of the other two former homeland complexes in the province, situated in Thohoyandou and Giyani.

The proposal created a great deal of interest, and the feasibility of the move is to be investigated.
