HLANGANANI - A resident of Madobi Village, Mr Rodgers Ngobeni (40), was assaulted to death by an angry mob last Friday night. The incident took place at his home village in the Hlanganani area.
According to the police spokesperson in the Mopani Area, Capt Moatshe Ngoepe, the deceased was engaged in a heated argument with Thomas Rivombo (20) at a local drinking spot before the incident.
During the argument Ngobeni allegedly produced a screwdriver and stabbed Rivombo in the chest. Rivombo was severely wounded during the incident and was taken to Elim Hospital, where he was said to be responding well to the medical treatment at the time of going to press.
After the incident, angry residents started chasing Ngobeni around the village. Realising that the mob was about to apprehend him, Ngobeni decided to climb up the nearby mountain. The mob followed him onto the mountain, where they managed to surround him.
They then started to assault him with various objects, including stones and wooden sticks. The police arrived at the scene during the ordeal. They immediately rushed him to Elim Hospital, where he was certified dead on arrival.
No arrest had been made at the time of going to press, but the police revealed that many people will be behind the bars in a few days' time. In a statement that was released by the police early this week, they highly discouraged the action taken by the residents of Madobi, saying they will never tolerate situations where people take the law into their own hands
