Limpopo’s top maths and science school, Mbiwi Secondary, is over the moon as one its learners recently won the National Science Olympiad.
As part of his prize, Dzulani Thanyani (17) jetted off to London on Wednesday to attend the International Youth Science Forum, which will finish on 31 August.
The National Science Olympiad is organised by the South African Agency for Science and Technology Advancement (SAASTA).
“In June I was announced as a winner in the category for best learner from a previously disadvantaged background, during an awards ceremony at Midrand. We also visited various engineering companies, laboratories and research centres during the event,” said Dzulani. He also received a laptop computer and the two-week-long trip to London, for the 48th Science Olympiad.
He said that he is planning to study actuarial science at the University of Cape Town (UCT) next year.
Mbilwi’s principal, Mr Nnyambeni Lidzhade, said his school “is always a winner and Dzulani’s trip will motivate the other learners”.
