A policeman employed at the Mphephu SAPS station briefly appeared in the Dzanani Magistrate's Court on Monday, facing a charge of attempted murder.
W/O Norman Naledzani (48) of Mauluma village allegedly shot granny Marandela Bebani (64) from the same village last Friday. The case relates to a quarrel between the two in the granny’s butchery in Mavhunga. Naledzani was allegedly off duty at the time of the incident.
Ms Bebani was shot in her right leg. She was taken to the Mauluma Clinic and later transferred to the Siloam Hospital. She was discharged on Monday.
The Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Brig Hangwani Mulaudzi, said Naledzani was arrested at the scene and his service pistol was taken from him. He added that the family should be patient while the investigation was continuing. Mulaudzi said that, pending the outcome of the investigation, they would take internal action against the police officer.
An angry son of the victim, Mr Daniel Mawela, says the family need answers from the police after the incident. He added that his family and the community were still shocked about the unpleasant incident.
Naledzani was granted bail of R1 500 and the case was postponed to 4 October.
