The Democratic Alliance in Limpopo Province has called for the dismissal of Transport MEC Tshenuwani Farisani, and department head Ben Mehale.
The appeal was made after the release of a report by the Auditor-General, which points to evidence of mismanagement in the department.
DA provincial leader Michael Holford said in a statement that the province was suffering because the Transport Department had only three senior managers in permanent positions, at a time when an effective, economically efficient transport system was urgently needed.
"The DA believes Premier Ngoako Ramatlhodi must answer for this tragic situation. He saw fit to intervene in the appointment of Mehale, thereby sidelining other suitably qualified candidates at the time. It is time for the Premier's actions to be called to account ", Holford insisted.
"It is time for the ANC to take what the DA says in a more mature manner, and forget about trying to sideline all DA initiatives. We have been and remain clear on corruption and service delivery. The DA will act swiftly on cases such as this; the question is "Can the Premier?" he added.
The reluctance of the Premier to take decisive action on the chaotic situation in this department was unacceptable to the party.
The Premier's office has not yet responded to the appeal.
