Funeral disrupted when "wrong" corpse arrives

News  Date: 30 August 2002

DAVHANA – More than 300 mourners were left shocked after they revealed that the funeral parlor had delivered a wrong corpse during a burial ceremony at Balanganani village last Sunday.

The deceased is an old granny Ms Mphephu Mabunda (70). The scene is exactly the same to that of SABC 2 Venda drama series, Muvhango where the funeral parlour delivered the wrong corpse, which led to the postponement of the burial.

The wrong body is said to have been of an old Pedi woman.

The family spokesperson, Mr Khwara "Shuffle" Nengwekhulu told Mirror that it was like a drama after they discovered that the identity of the body was unknown. This occurred when family members were in the process of paying their last respects (u tovhowa) to the deceased. "We were so devastated and disgusted. I don't understand the services of the funeral parlour, because they didn't allow us the next of kin of the deceased, to at least see her while she was still at the mortuary."

He added that their wish as a family was to bury the deceased on Saturday, but due to the fact that they told them that they were conducting many funerals they compromised and agreed to bury on Sunday. "There are strong possibilities that we might not find the corpse, because it might have been taken by another family who could have buried it. Nengwekhulu also stated that they spent almost R20 000 for funeral preparations and groceries.

It is said that people were just served with food after the disruption and lots of food was left untouched. Our attempts to contact a representative of the parlour were fruitless as the phone was continuously on voicemail. At the time of going to press, it was still unclear as to the whereabouts of the corpse.
