Univen SRC members suspended after allegedly abusing funds

News  Date: 30 August 2002

THOHOYANDOU -

The university's spokesperson, Mr Mmbangiseni Masia confirmed that Messrs Philip Leshabane and Pat Mabaso, SRC president and vice president (internal) respectively were suspended. It is alleged that the two, both members of Azasco, misrepresented facts to get university resources for a trip they undertook during the June holidays.

Masia said that the University is now setting up disciplinary processes about the matter. Meanwhile, Mr Peter Lentswane, also an Azasco member in the SRC, said they believe that their members would come clean after all the disciplinary processes. Lentswane said they expect the law to take its course and if the two are found guilty, they should be punished accordingly.

However, Bongani Sarela, who is the Publicity Information Officer of the SRC and a member of Sasco, said they welcomed the suspension of the two members. Sarela said they also appreciate the efforts made by the management. "We were always against the issue of squandering of funds. We have noted that the two comrades faked a trip to Cape Town to attend a gathering of Historically Disadvantaged institutions. As Sasco, we were concerned as it was only Univen that was going to attend that course."
