News  Date: 30 August 2002

THOHOYANDOU – In their attempt to register their dissatisfaction with Phalaphala FM's programme called Vhurereli ha Africa/vha Venda, Mudzi wa Vhurereli ha Vhavenda, an association that stands for the Vhavenda faith marched to Phalaphala FM's offices in Thohoyandou where they submitted their memorandum on Monday morning.

The memorandum, which was accepted by Philip Ramawa from Thohoyandou studios, requested a meeting between the Mudzi committee and Phalaphala FM management.

The agenda of the proposed meeting was as follows: opening remarks used on the faith program, Vhurereli ha Africa/vha Venda by Dr Nkhelebeni Phaswana on Sunday evening; the usage of one person in a programme which deals with four faiths; unsatisfactory answers given to the Mudzi letters written to the station since 2000; bad treatment given to Mudzi members by Phalaphala FM staff during their visit to the station, threats directed to Mudzi secretary by the DJ of faith programme and a poor relationship between Mudzi and Phalaphala FM.

Mudzi gave Phalaphala an ultimatum of twenty-one days from Monday to set a meeting with them. They said that they were prepared to meet the management of the station on any day, at any time and venue.

They also recommended that, while waiting for the date of the meeting, the opening remarks of the programme, which they say are an insult to the Vhavenda people, should be removed starting from this Sunday.

The opening remarks used on the programme, allegedly labelled the followers of the African faith as people with "silly ticks, full of poisonous ticks in their ears, with uncombed hairs, with scales on their legs"

Mudzi indicated that the Phalaphala delegation, in the meeting, should also include the station manager, Victor Ravhuanzo, whom they said they have never met in their countless meeting with Phalaphala.

Meanwhile, Hyson Musandiwa, who is the programme manager, said he was shocked to learn that Mudzi submitted a memorandum in Thohoyandou, as he was waiting to have a meeting with them, as per an earlier agreement.
