News  Date: 23 August 2002

THOHOYANDOU - An ambulance driver appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court on Monday morning, for allegedly raping a 22-year-old patient.

According to police spokesperson, Capt Ailwei Mushavhanamadi, Takalani Tshikhudo (45), attached to Tshilidzini Hospital, was transporting a patient to Ga-Rankuwa hospital for treatment in August last year.

On the way, the driver allegedly fondled with the victim's private parts. The victim also alleged that Tshikhudo then raped her on their way back to Tshilidzini Hospital.

The suspect was arrested on Sunday, August 18, after a long investigation. He appeared in the Thohoyandou Magistrate's Court, where his case was postponed to September 30. He was granted a R1 500 bail.

In his comment, the spokesperson for the health department, Mr Aluwani Netsianda said they were busy conducting their investigations on the issue. He, however, stated, that according to their records, the driver arrested is not the one appearing in the records of the one who was transporting the patients that day.

"Because police arrested the person based on identification of the driver by the patient, we will seek assistance from the police in this matter. It should also be known that rapists and abusers of women do not have space in our department. We will work closely with the police and monitor the decision to be taken by the court of law. We will then institute a disciplinary hearing were serious steps will be taken if need be. One thing for sure is that we will get to the bottom of the matter," said Netsianda.
