POLOKWANE - June Steele, Meat Market Manager from Shoprite Louis Trichardt, came out tops in the provincial round of Shoprite Checkers' Championship Boerewors Challenge held here on Saturday (17th).
A delighted June won a Shoprite Checkers gift voucher to the value of R1 000. She is also one of eleven provincial finalists who will take part in a fierce braai-battle for the title of Boerewors Champion 2002 and the grand prize of a Toyota Hilux Raider 2700i double cab 4x4 at Sun City on Saturday, September 7.
In this round, competitors from the Limpopo Province had to introduce their secret recipe boerewors to an independent panel of judges, which consisted of Radio Jacaranda presenter Johnathan Forrester, as well as Robert Cooper, Joeleen van den Berg and Paul Kohler, all three from the SA Chef's Association. The boerewors was judged while raw and also when cooked. The four connoisseurs had a difficult task to separate wheat from chaff, which clearly indicates that the recipes presented for the provincial rounds were of exceptional quality.
The supermarket group annually hosts the Championship Boerewors Challenge to give South Africans the opportunity to enter the boerewors recipe they regard as the best and to ensure that it sells boerewors that appeals to the majority of its shoppers.
The good news is that South Africans will soon be able to enjoy the Champion's boerewors, as it will be available in the meat market departments of all Shoprite, Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores under the Championship Boerewors label. The supermarket group's Championship Boerewors is packed in both thick and thin casings and complies with specific guidelines set for Boerewors. This South African delicacy contains a minimum of 90% meat, of which a maximum of 30% is allowed to be fat. The remaining 10% of the ingredients comprise spices and fluids, such as Worcester sauce, water and vinegar.
