Police put a lid on dagga traffic

News  Date: 23 August 2002

MALAMULELE – Only two days after the Malamulele SAPS Crime Prevention Unit arrested a woman suspect after being found in possession of dagga at the township's bus terminus, another bus passenger from Gauteng added on to the number of those apprehended for trafficking dagga into the Malamulele area.

Members of the community had informed the police that there is a passenger who has boarded a bus from Gauteng to Malamulele and was suspected of carrying dagga. The police then waited for the bus at Malamulele bus terminus and searched every passenger.

The police then arrested Fakazile Mabaso (44) from Tshiawelo Township (Soweto) after she was found with three bags of dagga, valued at an estimate of R15 000.

Mabaso appeared in the Malamulele Regional Court on August 1 and her application for bail was denied. She will appear in court soon.

In another similar case, the same police unit arrested another suspect for transporting dagga from Gauteng. Samuel Bila (36), a resident of Dinga settlement just outside Malamulele Township, was arrested after community members alerted the police of his suspicious luggage. He was found in possession of two bags filled to capacity with the drug.

The street price of the dagga in his possession, according to Insp Moses Chauke, spokesperson of Malamulele police station, is estimated at about R10 000.

Chauke further said that this was a breakthrough as this has helped in alleviating some of the crimes that would have been committed by those who would have used these illegal drugs. He stressed that high school pupils are the main target market of this unlawful business and this creates unnecessary unrest at schools.

A stern warning was sent to those who are still dealing in this intoxicating drug. Their days are numbered as no stone will be left unturned as the police want to ensure a crime free society.
