It is with great sadness that Makhado (Louis Trichardt) bids farewell to Eathorne van Niekerk, better known as Nana or Mrs V.
Nana passed away peacefully and with great dignity on Friday, 9 November, in her little cottage, just as she would have wanted.
Mrs V was an example to young and old as she taught the true meaning of service to others. She could often be seen in her little blue car, ferrying not only her grandchildren, but also the many who called her Nana.
She visited the sick and lonely, sometimes bringing home-made cupcakes, and always with a listening ear. “She has left us all with the greatest legacy – the gifts of kindness, humility, serenity and selfless love for others,” said her children.
The family, particularly Vaughn, Laura, Jernay, Sandy and Glen, would like to thank Dr Gaigher and the Soutpansberg Dorpswag for their prompt and sincere actions on the night of her passing, as well as Martin’s Funeral Services for their professionalism. They would also like to thank the greater Louis Trichardt community for their outpouring of support and compassion that has carried the family along.
Mrs V was a remarkable woman and, said her children, their own lives are the richer for having known her. Her life will be celebrated with a memorial service on Friday, 16 November, at the Agapé Christian Church at 11:00, followed by refreshments and fellowship at the Methodist Church hall. All are welcome.
(In the true spirit of who she was, Mrs V requested that, upon her death, donations instead of flowers be made to the Makhado Care Group, or people can show their compassion by simply doing a kind deed for someone in need).
Andries joined the Zoutpansberger and Limpopo Mirror in April 1993 as a darkroom assistant. Within a couple of months he moved over to the production side of the newspaper and eventually doubled as a reporter. In 1995 he left the newspaper group and travelled overseas for a couple of months. In 1996, Andries rejoined the Zoutpansberger as a reporter. In August 2002, he was appointed as News Editor of the Zoutpansberger, a position he holds until today.
