Brutal rapist still on the loose

News  Date: 29 August 2003

TSHILWAVHUSIKU – The search for the men who raped a woman last Monday afternoon, was still continuing at the time of going to press.

According to the spokesperson of the police at Tshilwavhusiku, Const Thilivhali Maloa, the 25-year-old victim boarded a taxi at the Thohoyandou taxi rank on the day of the incident, at about 11:00.

She requested the taxi driver to drop her at the Sibasa taxi rank where she was going to board another taxi to her home village, Hamakuya. On arrival at Sibasa the taxi driver drove in the direction of Nzhelele, instead of dropping her at Sibasa. The victim told the driver that she was going to Sibasa and that he should stop the vehicle. Instead of stopping, the driver proceeded with the journey and the other two occupants of the vehicle ordered her to keep her mouth shut. They then offered her a drink and she refused to drink, saying she was not thirsty. They then allegedly ordered her to take the drink at gunpoint. After taking the drink, the victim lost unconsciousness. She woke up the following day at about 12:00.

She was dumped in the bushes at Madombidzha. She then crawled through the bushes in the direction of a nearby homestead, as it was still difficult for her to walk. A certain woman discovered her later in the evening.

The woman kept her in her house for the night and took her to the Tshilwavhusiku Health Centre for medical treatment the following day, Wednesday August 20. That is where it was discovered through medical examinations that the victim has been raped. She proceeded to the Tshilwavhusiku police station where she reported the matter. No arrest had been made at the time of going to press, despite the fact that the incident took place two weeks ago.
