News  Date: 29 August 2003

The Department of Transport in the province is going to spend R2,5 million in the promotion of donkey carts to be more user friendly.

The Head of the department, Mr Ben Mehale, said they are in the process of promoting donkey carts in the province and want to provide reflective material to the carts and donkeys to avoid accidents, especially at night.

The project, which is going to spread all over the province, has already been launched at Mokopane, with 202 donkey carts. "We have already spent R150 000 in buying reflective material, and we are going to do the same to the rest of the province. The other thing is that donkey carts are economical and pollution free. They can also boost our tourism industries. If in Egypt they use camels to attract tourists, why can't we?"

Mehale said they have realised that the majority of people from rural areas in the province rely on donkey carts as a means of transport for different reasons.
