A 40-year-old Beit Bridge man last week committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree, after he had allegedly impregnated his neighbour’s 15 year-old daughter, police have said.

Police spokesperson, Chief Supt Lawrence Chinhengo said the man’s body was discovered last Friday in a bushy area near his homestead. “Our preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased and his neighbour’s 15 year-old daughter had sex on numerous occasions and the girl eventually fell pregnant. After the girl’s parents realised that she was pregnant they quizzed her until she revealed everything,” Chinhengo said.

The parents then confronted the man and told him that they would report him to the police. “We suspect that the deceased was afraid of being arrested. He therefore went to the bush and hanged himself. A suicide note was also found at the scene,” Chinhengo said.
