The police at Siloam have arrested a 22-year-old mother for dumping her newly born baby girl in a toilet pit at Tshitavha Village on Tuesday morning.
Insp. Ndidzulafhi Obert Masiagwala of the SAPS at Siloam told Mirror that the police had to break the toilet to retrieve the baby. They succeeded in retrieving her and took her to the Siloam hospital's mortuary, presuming she was already dead. The mortuary staff were shocked when the baby suddenly started to cry. Her cries alerted them that she was still alive and they took her to a hospital ward for treatment. She finally died in the hands of the nurses.
The mother told Mirror that she had dumped the baby because her boyfriend was not prepared to support the baby. She added that she was not satisfied with the child support grant.
She was not prepared to look after the second baby.
The police arrested her and she will appear in court soon.
In another incident, the police at Dzanani are still looking for two armed men who broke into the Spaza shop and stole about R700. Before they disappeared, they fired one shot into the air.
Insp. Samuel Tshikosi has appealed to community members to help by supplying information that could lead to the arrest of the suspects.
