Shock defeat for Mpheni Defenders

News  Date: 01 March 2013

Benny’s Care Soccer Development Academy deposited full points into their league account on Sunday.

They beat the much-respected Mpheni Home Defenders 1-0 in a Safa Vhembe SAB league match at the Tshiozwi grounds.

The visitors were strong at the far back and as a striking force, but they lacked cohesion in the middle of the park. The balls that threatened the defence of Benny’s were ballooned from behind.

The home team enjoyed more ball possession, but their promising moves were turned into a nightmare by rock-solid defence of Defenders. The match turned out to be a balanced affair in the last stanza. That was influenced mainly by the fact that Defenders were cooling the ball down in the middle of the park, thus giving their opponents no chance to do as they pleased as the case in the first half.

Both side used all their substitution chances earlier in the first half.

The goal that earned Benny's three vital points came in the 74th minute. Rendani Galedzane scored from a free kick and beat the keeper, Gift Ratombo. Mpho Matumba of Defenders was booked for the application of dirty tricks, while the centre back of Benny's, Brian Mashego, went into the referee’s book for dangerous play. A defender of Benny's, Andani Nemalili, was cautioned for wasting time late in the match.
