Bus driver shot dead in armed robbery

LOWVELD –Police in the Lowveld area were still searching for a man who had shot and killed a Great North Transport Bus Company driver, aty the time of going to press. The incident took place at Mohwibilung Village on Saturday evening at about 20:30.

According to a spokesperson of the police in the Lowveld, Capt. Moatshe Ngoepe, the deceased, Mr Ragwale Piet Mogwape (43), had just parked the bus at the bus terminus at the time of the incident. Before coming out of the bus he was approached by two armed men. According to the police statement the two men demanded cash from the deceased. Realizing that the deceased was reluctant to obey their instructions, one of them produced a firearm and shot him in the head. He died instantly.

The police arrested a man on Monday morning in connection with the incident. He was still to appear in court at the time of going to press, while the other one was still on the run.

In a separate incident the search for a man who had stabbed a 25-year-old man, David Maeko, to death with a knife was still on at the time of going to press.

According to the police statement the incident took place at Mohlakeng village in the Bolobedu area on Saturday evening at about 22:00.

It is stated that, while drinking beer at a local shebeen, an argument ensued between the suspect and the deceased. During the argument the suspect allegedly produced a knife and stabbed the deceased in the chest. He died on the spot. Although the suspect is well-known to the police, he was still on the loose at the time of going to press.
