Rasta suspended from Tshiitwa school

News  Date: 28 June 2002

MASHAMBA - A Grade 11 pupil at Tshiitwa Secondary School, Takalani Khurumedzha (19) of Mashamba Village, was allegedly suspended from attending classes because of his beliefs.

According to him, he was told that unless he shaved his hair locks, the school would not accommodate him. He said it is amazing that such a decision was taken, as he had been attending the school for the past three years with the same hairstyle.

He further pointed out that it was unfair for him to be singled out and reprimanded, while other pupils with ''even worse'' hairstyles were ignored.

He further mentioned that he is a member of the Rastafarian faith and quoted that in the new dispensation, everybody could worship without being harassed.

The headmaster of school, Mr Ramaru, said that he had ordered the pupil to go to cut his dreadlocks, but denied the rumours of a dismissal.
