News  Date: 25 June 2004

MUSINA – A 29-year-old Zimbabwean farm labourer was shot and killed here on a game farm, situated on the Pontdrif road.

A well-known local businessman, Mr Jewell Crossberg, was taken into custody after informing the police that he had accidentally shot and killed a Zimbabwean man on his game farm. He reported that he had fired into a bush near his farm house early on Monday morning, when he heard a noise there. He thought it was a baboon.

On investigation, he found the body of the Zimbabwean man, who was a farm labourer on a neighbouring farm. It is not known what the man was doing there. According to footprints found on the scene, there were several other people with the man in the bush. They apparently fled after the shooting.

Crossberg immediately reported the incident to the Musina Police.

After visiting the scene, the police took Mr Crossberg into custody. He appeared briefly in court on Monday afternoon and again at 17:00 for a bail hearing. Crossberg was released on R8 000 bail and is to appear again in court on 26 July.

According to a report, his .38 revolver was confiscated for ballistic tests.
