It was an occasion of great joy and happiness for students at the Vhembe FET College in Thohoyandou when Eskom unveiled some state-of-the-art equipment for the electrical engineering centre at the college on Monday.
According to Eskom’s chairman, Mr Zola Tsotsi, the unveiling formed part of activities planned to commemorate Eskom’s 90 years of existence and of giving back to the communities in which it operates.
The Minister of Public Enterprises, Mr Malusi Gigaba, also attended the event. “We are thrilled by the fact that Eskom is making this contribution to the college at a time when the country is celebrating youth month,” said Gigaba, unveiling the newly equipped centre. “This contribution not only demonstrates Eskom’s commitment to the empowerment of the youth, but also goes a long way in addressing the on-going issue of unemployment and the shortage of specialised skills in the country.”
He added that the commitment was in line with Government’s objective to create an enabling environment for all FET colleges in the country in order for the institutions to deliver quality education.
The initiative will benefit the college’s 874 electrical engineering students. “This will surely impact positively on our teaching and learning activities as our core business and will help us in the improvement of our results, thereby producing more artisans and electrical engineers in our country,” said Dr Joe Tshifularo, CEO and principal at Vhembe FET College.
