News  Date: 04 July 2003

TSHIMBUPFE - Young Andani Mphaphuli (13), a Grade 6 pupil of Sigwavhulimu Primary School in Tshimbupfe Venda, who was set alight by his stepfather, is still feeling the pain. Although the wounds have healed now, the scars on his body are testimony of what happened to him.

Andani was set alight by his stepfather after he was doused with petrol. The incident took place after Adani's mother, Livhuwani Murundwa, ended her relationship with the man. Adani was nearly killed in the attack.

His stepfather was sentenced to 107 years imprisonment without the option of a fine.

"I still feel some pain in my face and body, but more than anything I would like help from people and businesses to visit a plastic surgeon, because my face, chest and hands are disfigured, and I cannot carry the heavy things I used to," said Andani.

The young boy is affected even in his education because some of pupils are calling him as a monster, whereas others are accusing him of smelling badly. The principal of Sigwavhulimu, Mr Samson Masuvhelele, confirmed that some of the others pupils discriminate against Andani. He keeps Andani's books from Monday to Friday because he can't carry heavy equipment. Masuvhelele indicated that Andani had shown great potential from Grade 1 till Grade 5. Even in soccer he was a star. "I hope he will get plastic surgery, so that he can come back in a normal life and continue with his career," said Masuvhelele.

The civic structure, principal and family members need help for this young boy to continue with his studies and practise sports.
