Dazed and bewildered a small rhino calf stood for days, mourning next to his dead mother’s carcass.
Park rangers from the Nwanedi Nature Reserve in the Tshipise area discovered the mother’s carcass on Tuesday, 25 June. She was killed by poachers who had removed both her horns. Her calf stood next to her, nudging her and even licking her dried blood.
The calf’s crying even had some of the hardened members of the investigation tearing up. The team had to rush to get the calf to a place of safety where he would be taken care of and receive medical treatment.
At the time of going to press, investigators were hot on the heels of the poachers. On Thursday, 27 June, a post-mortem was held during which a single bullet was recovered and sent for ballistic testing.
In the meantime, the Zoutpansberger / Limpopo Mirror have learned that the calf is staying at The Rhino Orphanage near Mokopane. It is reported that the calf is doing a little bit better each day and will hopefully survive.
THE RHINO ORPHANAGE:
