De Beers’ Venetia Mine treated 26 Grade 11 and 12 learners from Musina, Alldays and Taaiboschgroet to an educational tour of the mine as part of the national Bring a Child to Work Day on 27 June.

“Educate a child, inspire a community, transform a country” was the slogan for the annual Venetia Mine visit, which speaks to the importance of the South African youth and the significant role that they as future leaders will play in shaping the future.

The tour saw learners in mathematics, science and accounting interacting with members of the Venetia Young Professionals Society, exploring career opportunities in the mining industry and learning basic safety, health and environmental principles. The day’s programme included a visit to the Venetia open-pit viewpoint, main treatment plant, primary crusher and skills-development centre.

Learners were also treated to talks by Assistant General Manager Hendrick Matjila and Public and Corporate Affairs Manager Josephine Pieters, who emphasized that the new Venetia Underground Project will be mined and managed by aspirant miners and future leaders from their generation. Attendees were encouraged to dream big and to work hard to make their dreams come true.

Through exposing the leaders of tomorrow to the exciting world of mining, Venetia Mine said they hoped to have inspired them to continue the diamond dream by utilizing the riches of the Limpopo Province to develop their communities in a sustainable manner.
