Boy drowns in well

News  Date: 02 August 2013

A two-year-old boy from Mabhikwa village outside Beit Bridge drowned after falling into a well, while his mother was fetching water, the police have said.

Police spokesperson A/Insp Eglon Nkala said the incident occurred last Friday.

“Around 10:00, the victim’s mother, Lorraine Mpofu (20), went to fetch water with her two-year-old boy, Bekithemba Ndlovu,at the borehole. She left the child to play unattended, while she went home with some water,” said Nkala. He said when she came back to fetch more water, the boy had drowned in a nearby well.

"The police attended the scene and a postmortem was waived. No foul play is suspected as investigations have been concluded,” said Nkala.

He advised parents to desist from leaving infants to play alone without supervision and discouraged the public from letting children play near water sources
